About Ferreira do Alentejo

Ferreira do Alentejo is a municipality in the Beja District, in Portugal. The population in 2011 was 5,749, in an area of 1054.19 km². It is the seat of the Ferreira do Alentejo Municipality. The municipality includes several small towns, including Cortes do Bairro, Silveiras and Vale do Gaio. The municipality is known for its production of cork, wine and olive oil. It is also known for its traditional Portuguese food and for its landscape, which includes the Alentejo plains and the foothills of the Serra de São Mamede. Ferreira do Alentejo was founded in the 13th century, and its name comes from the fact that it was the first town in Portugal to be granted a charter by King Dinis I of Portugal. The charter was granted in 1291. The municipality is bordered by the municipalities of Vidigueira, Cuba, Monsaraz, Mourão, Almodôvar and Beja. Ferreira do Alentejo is served by a railway station on the Beja-Ferreira do Alentejo-Mourão-Elvas line.
